How can inclusion be developed and lived?

There are many ways to promote inclusion. The specific approaches depend on the context and the needs of the society, community or organisation. What is important is a proactive and continuous approach to creating an inclusive environment.

It is also important to recognise that promoting inclusion is an ongoing process that requires constant effort. It can be fraught with challenges and requires everyone's willingness to learn and make changes to create a more inclusive environment.

Educate yourself and others:

Take the time to learn about the experiences and challenges of marginalised groups and share this knowledge with others. This can contribute to greater understanding and empathy.

Create a welcoming environment:

Ensure that your premises, policies and procedures are accessible and inclusive for all. This may mean making provisions for people with disabilities, offering materials in different languages or creating a safe and respectful space for people of all backgrounds.

Encourage participation:

Encourage people from different backgrounds to get involved and have a say in decisions that affect them. This could include creating leadership development programmes or other opportunities for participation.

Promote respectful relationships:

Promote a culture of respect and understanding by modelling inclusive behaviour and language and addressing instances of discrimination or exclusion when they occur.

Work on removing systemic barriers:

Exclusion and marginalisation are often the result of structural inequalities and prejudices embedded in systems and institutions. These barriers need to be recognised and dismantled in order to promote greater inclusion.

It is also important to recognise that inclusion is an ongoing process. It cannot be achieved overnight, but requires continuous efforts to create a culture of belonging, equity, and respect.
